Case Study 15: Chronic Knee Pain & Small Fibre Neuropathy
I am a 34 year old woman with multiple chronic health conditions. I first came to Surrey Physio following a car accident in my teens which caused pain in my knee that really limited my mobility. I’d been taken off crutches too early by an NHS physiotherapist and lost mobility as my knee swelled up badly. I was in incredible pain, unable to sleep or walk on the knee and was desperate for a second opinion.
Treatment: I was given hands on treatment to manipulate the knee, gentle strengthening exercises, ultrasound to reduce inflammation and advice for further tests to ascertain the true extent of the damage which revealed bone bruising and bursitis. This eventually began to lead to a realisation that my body responded differently to pain. Surrey Physio was the first physiotherapist service to begin to put two and two together and notice that my pain response wasn’t normal. Many years later I would be diagnosed with Small Fibre Neuropathy and this would result in further sessions of treatment being needed with Surrey Physio for other flare ups related to my condition of pain in my joints due to the related autoimmune connective tissue disorder I was also diagnosed with later in life.
Treatment at Surrey Physio has helped me maintain better mobility than I would otherwise have been able to do during periods of times when I’ve had flare ups. I have often had to be on crutches for some time due to my condition and treatment during these periods of times with hands on treatment and ultrasound has helped minimise inflammation and pain as well as helped me work on strengthening my joints which is very important in my chronic condition. I continue to work towards better mobility and on strengthening my joints but I am glad to have the support of Surrey Physio as I navigate the health challenges my chronic conditions provide. It’s reassuring to know a good physio service for dealing with chronic conditions and not just acute injuries.
Kind Regards
Miriam
