Case Study: Regaining Strength and Mobility after Chronic Lower Back Pain

The client, a 45-year-old woman, had been living with persistent lower back pain for more than four years. The pain affected daily activities such as bending, lifting, and carrying. Previous treatment attempts - including osteopathy and GP-led physiotherapy - offered only limited improvement. Following a BUPA referral, she began weekly sessions with Diana Goodwin, Specialist Women’s Health Physiotherapist at Croydon Physio.

Assessment & Approach: On assessment, the client presented with low core strength, reduced mobility, and symptoms consistent with Degenerative Disc Disease, caused by gradual wear and tear over time. Diana designed a holistic treatment plan combining physiotherapy, acupuncture, mobility retraining, and targeted strengthening exercises to rebuild core stability.

Treatment: Weekly sessions focused on improving posture, functional strength, and mobility through progressive, personalised exercises. Acupuncture was incorporated to relieve pain and muscle tension. As a Women’s Health specialist, Diana also provided education on gut health, hormonal influences, and lifestyle factors that could contribute to pain or hinder recovery.

Outcome: After approximately five months of consistent treatment, the client experienced significant improvement in both strength and pain levels. She regained confidence in daily activities, returned to local exercise classes, and was able to complete tasks such as shopping and carrying without assistance. Her physical progress also positively impacted her mental wellbeing, giving her a renewed sense of control and confidence.

Client Testimonial:
“After years of living with back pain, I finally feel in control of my body again. Diana’s approach is so much more than standard physiotherapy - she’s helped me understand how my body works and how to support it. My strength and mobility have improved dramatically, and I feel happier and more confident every day.”
