Case Study: Golfers Elbow Recovery – Luke’s Story
About the Patient
Hi, my name is Luke. I’m 39 years old and relatively active – I work in a silicone factory, I manage my son's football team, and having four kids of my own also keeps me on the move.
The Problem Before Treatment
Before I was diagnosed with Golfer’s Elbow, I didn’t actually know what the issue was. I had been going to the doctor and was only given medication to relieve the pain. This went on for about a year. At night my elbow would feel numb and uncomfortable, constantly throbbing and waking me up. I often had to get out of bed to move my arm because it was always numb. This really affected my sleep and became very frustrating.
During the day, the pain impacted my work. I would constantly hear clicking in the elbow, and the numbness would affect my daily activities. Eventually I decided to ask my doctor to refer me for further treatment, as medication alone wasn’t helping and the symptoms were getting worse.
Treatment Received
From the first time I walked into physio, I received a massage using a machine that helped relieve the tension, and I was given an exercise plan. Sticking to the exercises helped reduce the pressure, and after a couple of months I noticed a huge improvement.
I returned for a follow-up appointment where the signs of improvement were great. I was given additional exercises, including stretches, and advised to buy an elbow strap to help relieve pressure. I was also able to come off my medication, which was amazing. It boosted my mood, my sleep began to improve, and work became easier and more manageable.
Outcome
Wearing the elbow strap at night helped me sleep so much better. I no longer needed to continue the exercises daily as my elbow improved significantly. Occasionally, if I feel pain, I go back to the exercise plan for a few weeks, and it works wonders every time.
The help I received, and the fact that I can use the exercises as needed, has been a huge positive. My days are now so much better, and the pain is manageable thanks to the treatment I received.
