Case Study: Mechanical Lower Back Failure – Mikhail’s Story

About the Patient
I'm 38 years old, very tall and an active IT Specialist.

The Problem Before Treatment
After moving some equipment, I woke up one morning to pain in my lower back. I assumed this was a simple strain that would heal itself in a few weeks; however, this wasn't the case. On the third week, I woke up unable to move and wincing in severe pain. I found it difficult to get out of bed, stand or move. I was concerned the issue was something serious like a pinched nerve or slipped disk. I phoned my BUPA healthcare provider who tested my range of motion, before recommending a physiotherapist.

Treatment Received
Liam assessed my injury correctly and reassured me that it wasn’t a pinched nerve or slipped disk, and advised it was mechanical back failure. It sounded more serious than what it actually was. Over the course of several weeks, he guided me through the exercises and stretches to perform. He also provided a note to my employer to provide a standing desk and a more ergonomic chair.

Liam also encouraged the best sitting positions for my height both at home and in the office. After four or five sessions with Liam, we were both happy with my progress.

Outcome
After the first session with Liam, I decided to walk home instead of taking a taxi. Over time the pain subsided, and I was no longer wincing. I was able to return to the gym after a month, and once I returned I made sure to include Liam's exercises as part of my routine.

It's not an overnight fix, as it takes patience and effort to carry out the exercises at home. By the time my wedding came around, I was able to dance effortlessly with my wife, and I was smiling throughout the ceremony and reception.

Mikhail’s Advice
I encourage everyone that it’s okay to see a physiotherapist, even if you're young and can bench press your body weight. Better to have the issue looked at properly now instead of kicking the can down the road. Avoid slouching as much as possible, and if your employer has a standing desk or ergonomic chair policy, make the most of it.

Kind Regards,
Mikhail
