Case Study: Proximal Humerus Fracture Recovery
In November 2023, I fractured my upper arm after tripping on a kerb while running for a train. The hospital diagnosed a proximal humerus fracture, later confirmed to be three separate fractures. As a 70-year-old who has always led an active lifestyle - running, walking, cycling, and exercising regularly - I was devastated to be told I might regain only 50% mobility after six months.
Treatment: Determined to achieve a better outcome, I contacted Croydon Physio, where I had previously received treatment for sports injuries. From my very first session with Neil, his warmth, optimism, and expertise immediately gave me confidence. When I mentioned the doctor’s bleak prognosis, Neil smiled and said, “We can do better than that.” He was absolutely right.
Neil’s approach was both professional and personal. He encouraged me to record demonstrations of each exercise so I could practise safely and correctly at home. My mobility improved steadily, but when progress began to plateau, Neil consulted with Tim, who recommended an MRI scan to gain further insight. The results revealed that my injury was more complex than initially thought - one of only a few cases Tim had seen in his career.
Tim administered steroid injections and advised me to continue physiotherapy. With their combined care, and by diligently following my exercises, my recovery accelerated. The day I was able to raise my arm above my head for the first time was a moment of pure joy - and Neil’s delighted reaction said it all.
Outcome: Today I have regained around 99% mobility and returned to my full, active lifestyle. I am deeply grateful to both Neil and Tim for their skill, encouragement, and genuine care throughout my recovery.
I cannot recommend Croydon Physio highly enough - their professionalism, positivity, and partnership approach truly made all the difference.
Kind Regards
