Case Study: Shoulder and Neck Pain from Daily Activities

I’m in my early 30s and live a busy, active lifestyle. Between work, driving regularly, and family life, I’m constantly on the go. Like many people, I spend a lot of time sitting, driving, or using my upper body without always thinking about posture or strain.

The problem before treatment: The first issue I experienced was ongoing shoulder pain that gradually worsened over time. I had the pain for several months, and it began to interfere with simple daily movements and comfort, especially towards the end of the day. Sleep was sometimes affected, and certain movements felt restricted.

Some time later, I also developed neck pain and stiffness, which made turning my head uncomfortable. This was particularly noticeable when driving and during longer periods of sitting. By this point, the discomfort had become a daily issue and increasingly frustrating, affecting both my concentration and overall wellbeing.

What made me seek help: I decided to seek professional help when I realised the pain wasn’t improving on its own. The neck stiffness, in particular, began to affect my driving and daily routine, and I didn’t want the issue to get worse. I wanted to properly understand what was causing the pain rather than just managing it temporarily.

Treatment: From my first appointment at Surrey Physio, I felt reassured. The assessment was thorough, and everything was explained clearly in a way that made sense. Treatment involved a combination of hands-on therapy and a personalised exercise plan tailored to my shoulder and neck issues.

I attended a small number of sessions and was given exercises that were easy to follow at home. I also received helpful advice on posture, movement, and habits that were likely contributing to the pain. This education made a big difference, as it helped me understand how to prevent the problem from returning.

Outcome: After starting treatment, the improvement was noticeable. My shoulder pain reduced significantly, and movement became much more comfortable. When I later returned for neck treatment, my mobility improved, stiffness reduced, and everyday activities — especially driving — became far easier. The progress happened quicker than I expected, which was very encouraging.

I’m now back to normal daily life without ongoing pain. I still use the exercises occasionally if I feel any tightness, and they work well every time. Having these tools has given me confidence in managing my body long-term.

If you’re dealing with persistent shoulder or neck pain, don’t ignore it — getting the right treatment and guidance can make a huge difference.

“The treatment didn’t just relieve the pain, it gave me the tools to manage it long-term.”
