Case Study: Upper Back Pain Between the Shoulder Blades

I am a female with a fairly active lifestyle, including active jobs such as being a swimming teacher.

The problem before treatment: Before going to see Surrey Physio, I was experiencing pain between my shoulder blades, which made it very uncomfortable and difficult to get comfortable. I had been experiencing this pain on and off for a while, and often found it became worse at night, making it very uncomfortable to sleep.

What made me seek help: I decided to seek help because of the unpleasant pain in the middle of my shoulder blades, particularly as it was worse at night and made it difficult for me to fall asleep.

Treatment: I was referred to Surrey Physio via my GP and was booked in quickly for a consultation. I was told I had a muscle imbalance in my shoulders. I then attended multiple physiotherapy sessions, which included hands-on treatment as well as an exercise plan to practise during sessions and continue at home.

Outcome: After starting physiotherapy, I found the pain reduced both in how often it occurred and in its intensity. This allowed me to sleep better, even on days when I was still experiencing some pain.

My shoulders are now a lot better than they were. Due to the active jobs I do and the manual handling involved, I do sometimes experience pain, but I complete the stretches I was taught to help reduce it.

To anyone else experiencing something similar, it definitely does get better if you put the work in and complete the exercises and stretches — they are given to you to help.

Kind Regards
Jade
