Everest Summit – Day 18
Everest Base Camp
We woke up for breakfast at 8:30am and had some eggs and pancakes. After breakfast, we got changed and ready for doing some ice climbing. It was good fun, and what was even more impressive was the incredible surroundings and landscape. These incredible blocks of ice rising up from the group. It was really beautiful, and EBC is a special place.
We had lunch which was pretty incredible for being at 5270m. Sushi and other bits, and pudding was some fruit. I was very impressed with the quality of the food so again went to the chef to say thank you.
After lunch, we went to the SPCC (Sagarmartha Pollution Control Committee). We were not warmly welcomed, and they seemed very stressed. Apparently they had just got back from Camp 1 or 2, and were tired, which I understand. We then went on to 8K Expeditions who have a big area in EBC and a lovely dome tent with biscuits, cakes, coffee, and loads of snacks. The owner of 8K, Lakpa, was there and warmly welcomed us in with access to anything we wanted to eat or drink. I had a hot water and two biscuits. While I was there, I was introduced to a deaf guy from the UK called Michael Woods who was raising money for the National Deaf Children’s Society. We had a lovely chat via typing on the phone, and then did a joint interview which they said they would send to the BBC. The guy was a lovely guy and it was nice to connect. We had a selfie and shared social media details. After meeting Michael, I was introduced to a Dutch doctor called Louise and she very kindly offered me any medical support 24/7 “at any time, even during the night”. That was very kind, but I politely explained I try to avoid seeing doctors. With any luck that will continue for my duration of Everest summit attempt.
I then spent more time in our dining area that has a lovely hot heater. The temperature during the day was -9 degrees C. However, it felt warmer than that in the sun, and felt really chilly in the shade.
I went back to the Summitclimb communal tent – the heater was on and it was nice and warm. But there were still people coughing and spluttering. We had a very nice dinner that was similar to pizza but a Nepalese version. I went to bed around 8:30pm.
