Surrey Physio at the 2025 London Marathon

Surrey Physio once again played a pivotal role in the 2025 TCS London Marathon, held on Sunday, 27th April 2025.

Building upon our extensive experience in providing medical support for major sporting events, Surrey Physio's amazing team ensured the safety and well-being of runners on the course, in collaboration with St John’s Ambulance, and local doctors.

Conditions

It was warm on Sunday, with temperatures reaching 20-21 degrees Celsius, although it felt like 24-25 degrees with low wind levels. A combination of the largest ever starting number - 56,000, and the warm weather, made for challenging support from a physiotherapy perspective. Collectively our course team saw over 1400 runners. We also supported care for 2 heart attacks, and 16 heat strokes.

Extensive On Course Medical Support

Surrey Physio deployed a dedicated team of physiotherapists and support staff along critical points of the marathon route. Their responsibilities included:

  • Staffing Medical Stations: Physiotherapists were stationed between Mile 14 and Mile 25, providing immediate care for runners experiencing issues such as cramps, muscle strains, and fatigue.

  • Sweeper Bus Support: Three physiotherapists accompanied the Race Control Sweeper Bus, aiding participants unable to complete the race and ensuring they received prompt medical attention.

  • VIP Tent: At the finish line, Surrey Physio professionals were asked to provide massage, recovery and support to elite runners and celebrities.

Commitment to Volunteering and Community Engagement

Surrey Physio's involvement in the London Marathon again this year is something we really believe in. Our physiotherapists have a history of volunteering at prestigious events, including the Olympic Games, World Championships, and Commonwealth Games. This commitment extends beyond the marathon, as we actively seek volunteers to support various roles within their clinics, from social prescribing to reception duties.

Leadership and Expertise

The team's efforts were led by experienced professionals, including Clinical Director Tim Allardyce, who is the Course Lead Physio for the London Marathon, and manages a team of 100 physiotherapists and students along the course.

Our Surrey Physio support team members included:

  • Harry, Dani, Jerin and Vedika (VIP Tent)

  • Avni, Astel and Shreya (Sweep Bus)

  • Damith, Lateef, Fiaz, Simran (Station Leads)

  • Sarah (Course Physio)

Looking Ahead

We really believe in supporting the London Marathon, in our home city. We will be back next year, to volunteer and support even more runners. We are glad that we were able to support the marathon with 13 of our team members. Great job team Surrey Physio.
