Saalbach 2025 Ski Alpine World Champs! Yep, we'll be there volunteering.

In February 2025, Saalbach in Austria hosted the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, drawing athletes and supporters from around the globe. Among the many teams competing was the Royal Tonga Ski Federation, whose participation marked another Ski World Championships milestone for the Pacific island nation. We were there, supporting and volunteering, as part of our commitment to Tonga and their great teams.

A Tradition of Volunteering

Surrey Physio feels it’s our calling to provide physiotherapy, osteopathy and medical support at international competitions, including the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, and the London Marathon. Our involvement in Saalbach 2025 continued this tradition, and we love going to World Championships where we can help teams to accomplish their goals. February 2025 was our third World Ski Champs, after Garmisch in 2011 and Åre in 2019.

Empowering Team Tonga

For Team Tonga, competing in the alpine skiing championships was both a challenge and an opportunity. The challenges are fairly obvious, a very small nation with no natural resources for winter sports competing against the mighty Americans and Europeans. The opportunity: to put Tonga on the world map again, showing the ski community that Tonga is there to compete.

The Broader Impact

The partnership between Surrey Physio and Team Tonga exemplifies the spirit of international cooperation and the vital role of medical support in sports. By volunteering our services, Surrey Physio give our commitment to athletes and team officials. However, we’re also grateful for the incredible trust and support that Tonga gives us. It’s a great camaraderie and great relationship. The broader objective: Milano 2026 for the Winter Games, and to inspire more Tongans to compete in winter sports.

As the world reflects on the memorable moments from the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, we look back with fondness on a great championships, excellent organisation from the Organising Committee and FIS, and good fun.

Thank you to Steve, Leafa, Kasete, Markus and sponsors Clyso. We’re grateful to you.
